What is an Air Spring on a Truck?

Air springs (also called air bags or air suspensions) on trucks are a key component of the suspension system, using compressed air inside a flexible, reinforced rubber bellows (shaped like a cylinder or corrugated sleeve) to support the vehicle's weight, absorb road shocks, and provide a smoother ride, especially under varying loads.

Core principle: Instead of using rigid steel coils or leaf springs, air springs use the elastic properties of compressed air. When the truck hits a bump, the air inside the bellows compresses, absorbing energy. When the bump is passed, the air expands, pushing the suspension back to its normal position.

Key Components of the Air Suspension System

Air springs (air bags): Flexible rubber bellows that contain the compressed air and do the actual bouncing.

Air compressor: Generates compressed air.

Air tank (air tank): Stores compressed air for quick adjustments.

Height control valve/sensor and electronic control unit (ECU): Monitors ride height and automatically inflates or deflates the spring to maintain a preset height, regardless of load.
