Why are Air Springs Made of Rubber?
This is the most important role of rubber in air springs. The core of air springs is to use the elasticity of compressed air, so air tightness is crucial. Rubber has high elasticity and flexibility, and can fit tightly on metal parts (such as pistons and end covers) to form a reliable sealing interface. Even if it is repeatedly deformed (compressed and stretched) during operation, rubber can maintain a good sealing effect to prevent high-pressure air leakage. This is difficult to match with metal or hard plastic.
Air springs need to deform significantly and repeatedly to adapt to load changes and road impact. Rubber has extremely high elastic deformation capacity (elongation can reach hundreds or even thousands of percent), and can easily withstand frequent compression, stretching and bending deformation. The elastic modulus of rubber is relatively low and adjustable, which can provide the required flexibility and effectively absorb and buffer vibration and impact.
During vehicle driving, air springs may undergo several or even dozens of compression/rebound cycles per second. Rubber has excellent flex fatigue resistance and can maintain performance in millions or even tens of millions of dynamic deformation cycles without cracking or failure.
Rubber materials (especially high-performance rubber used for air springs) have sufficient tensile strength, tear strength and wear resistance, and can withstand the stress generated by internal air pressure, installation stress, and external forces such as friction and scratching that may be encountered during use, ensuring the durability of the airbag.
Rubber formulas can be adjusted according to specific needs (such as the selection or combination of natural rubber, synthetic rubber such as chloroprene rubber, butyl rubber, EPDM, etc.) to optimize its weather resistance (anti-ozone, UV), temperature resistance, oil resistance, damping characteristics, etc. Rubber can be formed into complex airbag shapes (such as bladder type, sleeve type, membrane type) through molding, vulcanization and other processes to meet the needs of different structural designs.
The rubber material itself has a certain internal friction, which can absorb part of the energy during the deformation process and dissipate it as heat energy. This provides the air spring with a certain inherent damping, which helps to suppress spring resonance and rapidly decay vibrations. Although the main damping function is usually undertaken by the shock absorber, the damping of the rubber airbag itself is also a useful supplement.
Why not Choose Other Materials?
Metal | Although strong, it lacks the necessary flexibility and sealing, and cannot achieve the required large deformation and dynamic sealing. |
Hard plastic | The flexibility, elasticity and sealing are usually not as good as rubber, the fatigue resistance is poor, and it is easy to become brittle and crack under repeated deformation |
Fabric | It is not sealed by itself and requires a coating (usually also rubber-based), but pure fabric cannot provide reliable airtightness. |
